It’s the very first time retailers have been allowed to open this Sunday. Meanwhile, authorities report 2,242 Corona cases and 17 deaths.
The lockdown has been over for a week, and Corona numbers are in a tailspin now, just before Christmas. On Monday, 3,251 people tested positive for the corona virus in a 24-hour period; Tuesday, 2,859; Wednesday, 4,224; Thursday, 3,046; Friday, 2,899; and yesterday’s shopping Saturday, 2,167.
For the very first time, stores in Austria are allowed to open on today’s fourth Advent Sunday. Politicians, business and social partners have negotiated a one-time Sunday opening to fill the lockdown-damaged coffers as much as possible before Christmas.
As data from the crisis team shows, 2,242 new infections and 17 deaths have been reported nationwide since the previous day.
By comparison, a week ago Sunday (Dec. 12), Austria counted 2,479 new Corona infections and 19 deaths.
Provincial figures:
Burgenland: 46
Carinthia: 177
Lower Austria: 391
Upper Austria: 411
Salzburg: 104
Styria: 236
Tyrol: 322
Vorarlberg: 145
Vienna: 410
On the hospitals there is likewise a relaxation, even if a tragic one: 17 intensive care beds (at present 479 occupied) became free since the previous day, at the same time 17 died because of the Coronavirus. A total of 1,773 still have to be cared for in Austria’s hospitals.
